OVERVIEW

Mt. Lorette and Mt. Kidd are two 18-hole championship golf courses designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. located in Kananaskis Country, Alberta, at the heart of the Canadian Rockies, within an hour’s drive from both Calgary and Banff. When the golf course opened to the public in 1983, Jones was compelled to claim about the Alberta landscape and surrounding Canadian Rockies, “It is the best natural setting I’ve ever been given to work with.”

“Playing from 7,102 yards from the gold tees, Mt. Lorette is a tough enjoyable test of golf with water potentially coming into play on seven of the opening nine holes,” said Greg Dickman, Canada golf expert.

At 7,072 yards from the tips, the Mt. Kidd course presents an equally enjoyable yet challenging round of golf for those on golf vacation in Kananaskis Country, Alberta. Hole No. 4 on the Mt. Kidd course is Kananaskis’ most photographed hole. Its elevated tee and large green surface help elevate concerns about its surrounding water feature.

“Taking one less club is advisable depending on the wind direction,” according to Dickman.

The surrounding natural setting of the Canadian Rockies offered in Kananaskis Country, Alberta is tough to beat. Both courses see approximately 60,000 rounds of golf in a shortened season, and overall the courses are set up with the intention to provide an enjoyable experience, so be sure to book a golf package here while in Alberta.

“The course is extremely well maintained without going overboard. In keeping with the theme of an enjoyable experience, and recognizing issues of pace of play, normally considered out of bounds areas are treated as lateral hazards. Stroke and distance applies,” said Dickman. “The 140-plus bunkers on both Kananaskis Country courses are filled with silica sand, making for consistent bunker play.”

DISLIKES

The Kananaskis Country facility sees its fair share of corporate events that often affect the pace of play. To combat this, course marshals are continually visible and always diligent, though this obviously serves as both a pro and a con. Both courses are cart-only, which means you may have to bring an assortment of clubs to your ball depending on its position relative to the hole. Large boulders identify 150-yard markers, however 100-yard markers are not visible unless you are standing close to a sprinkler head. The concession to adhere to pace of play policy by marking all off-course areas as lateral hazards creates a murky scoring system.

PLAYING STRATEGY

At close to 3,000 meters above sea level here in Kananaskis Country in Alberta, Canada, your ball will fly roughly 5 > 10 percent further, so adjust on your approach shots. If you have a range finder, bring it along as yardage is marked every 50 yards on the cart path. Spend time on one of the four practice putting surfaces to help get your speed down on their bent grass greens, said Dickman.
